Today I want to tell you about the city I
love most in Israel
(besides Jerusalem), Tel Aviv, |

עיר נהדרת, אבל לא עיר הבירה
של ישראל,
ירושלים היא עיר הבירה. |
it’s a wonderful city, but it’s
not the capital of Israel,
Jerusalem is the capital. |
| הביקור
הראשון שלי בתל אביב היה
באלף תשע מאות
חמישים ותשע, |
My first visit to Tel Aviv was in 1959, . |
| כאשר
הייתי סטודנט צעיר מדרום
אפריקה. |
when I was a young student from South Africa |
| הגעתי
לארץ לעבור קורס למדריכים
בתנועת הנוער
הבונים, |
I had come to Israel to undergo a course
for leaders in the
Habonim Youth Movement. |

לא ידעתי עברית, |
Then (at that time)I didn’t know Hebrew,
, |
| אבל ידעתי את המלה "פלפל"
כי
אנשים אמרו לי שזה מה שאוכלים
בישראל. |
but I knew the word “falafel”
because people had told me that
that is what they eat in Israel |
| אבל
לא ידעתי באיזה סוג של
חנות מוכרים פלפל. |
but I didn’t know in what kind of shop
they sell falafel. |
| יום אחד
הלכתי ברחוב אלנבי, |
One day I was walking in Allenby Street, |
| אחד
הרחובות הראשיים של תל
אביב |
one of the main streets of Tel Aviv and |
| הרהרתי
איפה אוכל לקנות פלפל. |
I wondered where I could
buy falafel. |
| הגעתי
עד רחוב ביאליק וראיתי,
קונדיטוריה, זה השם
שמשתמשים בו בארץ בשביל
מאפיה שעושה עוגות, |
I came as far as Bialik Street and I saw
a cake shop (In Israel
kondituria is the name for a bakery that makes cakes). |
| זאת הייתה קונדיטוריה
מאד מפורסמת בשם
"קפולסקי" אחת הקונדיטוריות
המפורסמות ביותר של הארץ
של הימים
ההם, |
This was a very famous cake shop by the name
of “Kapulsky”, one
of the most famous cake shops in Israel of those days. |

שבטח פה מוכרים פלפל. |
I thought that surely here they would sell
falafel. |
| נכנסתי לחנות פגשתי
מוכרת, אשה מבוגרת, קצת
שמנה
לבושה בחלוק לבן, |
I went inside the shop and met a saleslady,
a mature lady, a
little on the plum side, dressed in a white coat. |
| העוגות
נראו לי מאד טעימות, |
The cakes looked delicious to me, . |
| הן
היו מצופות בשמנת מוקצפת
לבנה עם שוקולדה מסביב |
they were coated with white, whipped cream, surrounded by chocolate. |
| ומלמעלה
היה דובדבן, |
and on top there was a cherry |
| מאד
רציתי לקנות עוגה כזאת, |
I very much wanted to buy a cake like that |
| אבל
אנשים אמרו לי שבישראל
אוכלים פלפל, לא
עוגות, |
but people had told me that in Israel people
eat felafel |
| לכן בקשתי
מהאשה פלפל והיא הסתכלה
עלי במבט חודר וקצת כועס |
So I asked the woman for felafel and she
gave me a sharp, little
angry, look |
| והסבירה
לי משהו בעברית |
and explained something to me in Hebrew |
| אבל
אני לא הבנתי עברית והתביישתי
להגיד שאני לא
מבין, |
but I didn't understand and was embarrased
to say that I didn't
understand |
| לכן
אמרתי "כן" והיא הביאה לי
עוגה, |
so I said yes and she brought me a cake |
| חשבתי
שזה מה שקוראים פלפל. |
I thought that that is what they call felafel |
| אחר כך
למדתי עברית וגם מה זה
פלפל, |
afterwards I learnt Hebrew and also what
felafel is |
| היום
אני יודע שהיא אמרה לי
לאכול עוגה ולא
פלפל |
today I know that she told me tlo eat cake
and not felafe |
| כי
אנשים הגונים לא אוכלים
פלפל. |
because decent people don't eat felafel |
| היום אני אוכל הרבה פלפל,
אני לא מסכים עם האשה
ההיא בקפולסקי |
Today I eat lots of Felafel, I don't agree
with that woman at
Kapulsky's |

אבל לא הייתי מעלה בדעתי
לבקש פלפל בקונדיטוריה. |
But I woudn't think of asking for felafel
in a cake shop |
